About our Blog

Hello and welcome to our Dickinson Wright Canada-U.S. Business Law Blog. We are very happy to be launching this business and legal resource for leaders and managers with Canadian or cross-border legal interests.

Before I dive into what this blog is all about, let me introduce Dickinson Wright Canada and myself.  I’m the Managing Partner of the Toronto office. Dickinson Wright LLP is a full-service business law firm specializing in cross-border and Canadian legal counsel. While we’re based in Toronto, one of our greatest strengths is that we manage legal services for our clients across multiple industries whose business interests touch both sides of the Canada-U.S. border.

Through our blog posts, we’ll provide a forum for discussing Canadian legal developments impacting the way your organization conducts business in Canada and across the Canada-U.S. border.  Written by our team of expert business lawyers, our bi-weekly posts will cover Canadian corporate law, finance, tax, IP, immigration, cybersecurity, cannabis, trade issues, government procurement, product regulations and advertising, franchising, M&A, insolvency, employment law and real estate law.   Each month we will focus on a different business theme.  For example, in the coming months we have some interesting posts planned on employment law, trade and cannabis.

Because of our firm’s cross-border structure we work as an integrated and connected team with our counterparts across the United States.   Our Canada-U.S. Business Law Blog posts will draw on our collaborative, cross-practice and inter-office teams.  Our goal is to provide you with practical insights into managing your business’ Canadian and cross-border legal concerns.

I encourage you to take a look at our first post written by Wendy Hulton, a partner in our Toronto office and the head of our Canadian Cybersecurity Practice.  Wendy’s post covers the much-discussed subject of data privacy and security.  This is of particular concern given the current Facebook data sharing scandal.  Since the scandal broke many of our clients have reached out to us with concerns about their data privacy and the threat of a breach.   Wendy writes about some of the key takeaways and best practices identified at the recent Incident Response Forum.  The forum brought together a very talented faculty of experts specializing in cybersecurity and data breach response.

I hope you’ll find our blog helpful, bookmark us (www.canada-usbizlawblog.com), visit us often, and use it as a resource.  If you have any comments and opinions on our blog, please leave them on my (linkedin.com/in/mark-shapiro-53aa2650), or on the Dickinson Wright Canada, LinkedIn or Twitter page.

We look forward to hearing your comments and generating some good discussion on these important topics.
